I am President and owner of Wilhelmina Kids and Teens, one of the world's most prestigious modeling agencies. During the past ten years I have kept a journal of great beauty tricks and fashion tips from the industry's top photographers, editors, designers, trend setters, stylists and hair and makeup artists. For some time I have wanted to share this insider’s information with the thousands of young girls who are fascinated with fashion and beauty, some of whom may even aspire to be models themselves.
My journal, which has become the primary source book here at the agency, is the basis for the JAM website and the upcoming Fall 2009 My Tween Lifestyle Collection of books. At the core of my books and the JustAskMarlene web site is empowering girls to find their unique beauty and have it shine from the inside out. “If one thing from one of my books helps one girl through the bumpy road of adolescence, the world is changed forever” says Marlene.
“Just ask Marlene” is a phrase heard again and again in our Park Avenue offices. My models know that I am their “go to girl” for whatever support and guidance they need. If I don’t have the answers, I always know just who to call.
When I was the age of the girls I work with every day, nobody talked much about self -esteem. But, I had it. I wasn't the prettiest. I wasn't the most popular. I often wore my sister's hand me downs. But for some reason people looked up to me as if I had the key to cool. I believe this was because when I woke up, even on those bad hair days. I accepted myself as the best me I could be. And when in doubt, I knew where to go to for guidance.
I love my work, staff, colleagues and all the great girls I represent. I am so lucky to have a job where I nurture young talent and steer them through the ins and outs of an exciting but sometimes overwhelming industry. With the jam site I welcome you into a community where any girl can know she is the best she can be. I like to think that wherever your dreams take you, JAM and My Tween Lifestyle Collection will help you get there.
So now let’s go jam!
