In Peter Pan, when Peter is teaching Wendy to fly, he tells her to “think lovely thoughts.” Then, guess what? She starts to fly. That’s what you call the power of positive thinking. Positive thinking is such a strong force that it can make real changes. It might not happen overnight, but when you think lovely thoughts, amazing things occur.

Let’s get started with those lovely thoughts right away. Take the negative sentences below and turn them around into positive statements.

I don’t like my body. I love my body. My body is amazing. It gets me around to all my favorite activities and is loyal, hardly ever letting me down by getting sick.

I’m not pretty. I am beautiful. My beauty starts inside me and shines through every day!

Bad hair days are a part of life. Everyone has them once in a while. Still, you can do something to combat common styling problems. Here are solutions to everyday hair emergencies.

Problem: Hair Raising Static

Solution: Rub a fabric softener sheet from the clothes dryer over your hair. It banishes static instantly. (And it smells good too!)

Problem: Cowlicks

Solution: Wet your cowlick and style it in place. Apply styling wax or pomade to keep it down.

Bonus! Out and about and keep getting fly-aways? Grab some lip gloss and take a pea sized amount to use it as an instant “gel” to put that hair in it’s place!

Problem: Frizz

Solution: Spray hair with a light conditioning spray and let it air dry.

Homework Blues!

Homework can be one of the biggest sources of stress in a kid’s life. It doesn’t have to be. Getting organized is the best thing you can do to reduce anxiety and improve your grades. Your most important tool is a daily planner or diary (I never leave home without mine), where you can write all your assignments and when they are due.

You should pick the same time every day when you do your homework–it can be before your afternoon snack or right after dinner, whenever you work best. That way homework becomes a daily ritual.

Check the assignments off on your daily planner as you do them. You won’t believe the feeling of accomplishment you’ll have when you see all those neat check marks!

Travel The World–Alone?

Laura Dekker, the 14-year old Dutch solo sailor, has reached Africa.

On a mission to be the youngest sailor to sail the world, last week Dekker wrote on her weblog, “After seeing only water for four days I spotted land this morning. Unfortunately, I could see the land earlier on my radar but not by looking out because of poor visibility.”

Reaching the Canary Islands, Dekker will rest and wait out the Atlantic storm season. While doing so, she plans to catch up on school work and get visits from her family.

Her website says, “Born aboard of a boat off the coast of New Zealand, from a young age Laura Dekker has dreamt about sailing. But Laura is more a do-er than a dreamer. When she was six she sailed her Optimist dinghy across the lake where she lived. As she gets older, she wants to go further. – too far for some. She has already sailed her boat Guppy twice to Friesland, where she had a six week vacation, and now she intends to pursue her dreams far beyond local mudflats and waters. She wants to circumnavigate the globe – a massive aspiration for a young girl.”

Once the storm season passes, Dekker will head to the Cape Verde Islands and then the Caribbean.

Sailing alone is not a  new idea. Abby Sutherland, 16, and Jessica Watson have also made solo sailing trips. Sutherland needed to be rescued earlier this year after suffering boat trouble.

Tell us what you think! How old is too young to sail the world alone?!

Dear Marlene!

Hi Marlene!

I have a major problem that I really need to sort out.  Whenever I speak to a grown adult, they ask me what I want to be when I am older? At first I just gave them the same answer ‘I dont know,’ but one day my mum asked me the question, and when I said the answer, she got a bit upset and said that I need to find out because I’m going to be 9 and this is the time for me to be working on towards what I want to be. All my other friends know what they want to be, and  it kind of frustrates me.

For a couple of days I’ve been taking some job quizzes online to see what I can be, but they were all boring and I didnt want to be any of them. I’m a fun, creative person, I’m more practical, and I love excitement. I would love a job that I could get up and say, ‘I Love my Job’!

Please can you help me?!

First of all, Don’t worry! Not knowing what you really want to do right now is okay! Even if you do find something,  you can change your mind a hundred times even before you reach high school! Pick something that’s seems fun and would be interesting to you.

You may even find something in your every day tasks! For example, do you like putting together outfits and getting dressed for school, maybe you would like a career in fashion. How about buildings and skyscrapers? Do you like how they are designed and built? You could be interested in architecture or engineering. Even while you’re in school, what’s your favorite subject? Art? History? Maybe, you even want to teach!

Not to confuse you, but there are a world of opportunities when it comes to picking a career. Over the next few years you will come across many different ideas and subjects and one day, one of them will interest you so much, you’ll say, “Now, I can do that”!

Back To School With JAM-Hair Color or Hair Disaster?

Now that it’s time to go back to school, you may be taking a trip to the salon and thinking of getting something new. Here are a few things to remember before you go:

1. Talk To Your Parents

Your parents have a pretty good idea of what looks best on you and their own rules for dying and cutting. Pull some pictures from magazine, or print them out from online and bring them to a “pre” salon meeting. That way you can compromise and work with them to find something that’s suitable for you.

2. Don’t Rush To Color

Dying your hair has long lasting results–and it’s not just the new color. Sometimes dying or highlighting your hair requires bleaching or other techniques that leave your hair dry and damaged. Be sure that if you want to try out something that you’re ready to keep up with it! That includes touch-ups, keeping it moisturized and healthy.

3. Get The Details

You may think that you need a trim, and it could be true! But be sure to talk with your stylist (and parents) about how much is 1-2 inches. Before you pick a length be very specific and clear about how you want it and what length. If you just say “2-3 inches,” you may end up with your hair shorter than you think!

4. The Stylist is Not a Magician

It’s easy to think that your hair stylist can create whatever you can think up or show them a picture of, but it’s not that easy sometimes. The key is to TALK! TALK! Oh and TALK! Make sure you say exactly how you want it, exactly how long or short and exactly what color you want. The more specific you are, the easier it is for your stylist to give you their professional opinion and give you exactly what you want!
