Hi Marlene!

I have a major problem that I really need to sort out.  Whenever I speak to a grown adult, they ask me what I want to be when I am older? At first I just gave them the same answer ‘I dont know,’ but one day my mum asked me the question, and when I said the answer, she got a bit upset and said that I need to find out because I’m going to be 9 and this is the time for me to be working on towards what I want to be. All my other friends know what they want to be, and  it kind of frustrates me.

For a couple of days I’ve been taking some job quizzes online to see what I can be, but they were all boring and I didnt want to be any of them. I’m a fun, creative person, I’m more practical, and I love excitement. I would love a job that I could get up and say, ‘I Love my Job’!

Please can you help me?!

First of all, Don’t worry! Not knowing what you really want to do right now is okay! Even if you do find something,  you can change your mind a hundred times even before you reach high school! Pick something that’s seems fun and would be interesting to you.

You may even find something in your every day tasks! For example, do you like putting together outfits and getting dressed for school, maybe you would like a career in fashion. How about buildings and skyscrapers? Do you like how they are designed and built? You could be interested in architecture or engineering. Even while you’re in school, what’s your favorite subject? Art? History? Maybe, you even want to teach!

Not to confuse you, but there are a world of opportunities when it comes to picking a career. Over the next few years you will come across many different ideas and subjects and one day, one of them will interest you so much, you’ll say, “Now, I can do that”!

Dear Marlene!-I Want To Do A Fashion Show!

Hi Marlene,

I want to do a fashion show to raise money to help animals, or children, or my community, but I don’t have the money to buy clothes and it is still being decided, plus I don’t know if any one of my friends will want to it..It still hasn’t been decided but I want to do it. What should I do?

What a great idea! Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Find the organization that you want to help. You can pick a large one like PETA or a small animal shelter in your neighborhood. Or Big Brothers Big Sisters or kids who are sick in your local hospital. What you decide is up to you. When you find one you like, contact them and let them know your plans to do a fashion show. They may be willing to donate, time, money or even promotional materials to help out with your show.

2. Find a place to host the show. Your local YMCA, your school’s auditorium or you can find a local retailer who may be willing to let you use their space!

3. Apply for a grant with DoSomething.Org. They give out grants to teens and tweens to start projects in their communities. In the meantime. Ask for donations from family and friends. Tell them that a portion will go to charity and the other to the shows planning.

4. Find the clothes! Ask local retailers or you can even go to the thrift store to save on costs and put together your own outfits. One bag could cost you less than $20!

“My idea for making a change in the world is biking! Biking to school can save lots of fuel! If everyone rode there bike to school the air would be less poluted and also, biking is a great way to get some exercise! It gets your heart pumping and its fun! I think more people should bike or walk instead of driving to school.”
-Tori, Colorado

“I would change the education system and the government.”
-Lisa, New Jersey

“Start recycling in my school. I would make sure that we had different bins for paper, bottles and trash.”
-Jen, New York
