The Ladies Free Skate took place last night in Vancouver at the Winter 2010 Olympic games. Earlier in the week, the women showed off their skills in the short program, but last night they pulled out all the stops to deliver memorable routines to the excited arena crowd.

Americans Mirai Nagasu and Rachael Flatt had solid programs but fell a bit short of the podium. Mirai took 4th overall and Rachael took 7th.

The three top placing Olympians were Yu-Na Kim from Korea, Mao Asada from Japan and Joannie Rochette from Canada. Joannie’s performance was heartfelt and captivating as she skated in memory of her mother who passed away just a day before she was to deliver her short program at the Olympic games. The Canadian crowd rallied around Joannie to motivate her into a Bronze medal finish. What a strong young athlete! Go, Joannie!

The games were really exciting to watch yesterday. In just a few days the 2010 Winter Olympics will be wrapping up in Vancouver but we can always learn from the discipling and dedication these athletes posses and how to apply it in our own lives. OLY-2010-SNOWBOARD-HALFPIPE
Shaun White celebrating his Gold Medal win last night.

Yesterday marked Day 5 of the Winter 2010 Olympics and the American athletes showed their stuff winning the U.S. 3 gold medals! Superstar snowboarder Shaun White set the precendent for this years games with a new trick called the “Double McTwist 1260.”  It’s a combination of three twists and two flips, all in the same trick, on a snowboard. Whoa, sounds crazy, right?! Watching it was even more surreal. Pro snowboarders propel themselves almost  30 feet in the air and do tricks and spins in the air only to land and do them all over again on the other end of the pipe!  American Scotty Lago also had two great runs and took home the Bronze medal for the Men’s Snowboarding Halfpipe event.

American, Shauni Davis also took home gold for the Men’s 1,000 meter speedskating and famous U.S. speedskater, Apollo Ono, had a good run on the short-track that easily advanced him through the preliminaries.

Perhaps the biggest triumph of the night came from veteran skiier, Lindsay Vonn, who pushed through the pain of a bruised shin to win gold in the Women’s Downhill.  Julia Mancuso took silver in the Women’s Downhill, driving the American medal total up to 14… currently first in the world!

The events airing tonight are Men’s Figure Skating, Women’s Snowboarding Halfpipe and Women’s Speedskating. Will YOU be watching?

My modeling agency, Wilhelmina, represents all types of talent including models, actors and athletes. The Sports division of Wilhelmina represents one of this year’s Olympic athletes, Allison Baver.

Allison is an American short track speed skater and has been speeding up the ranks since 2005. She was on the Olympic team for the 2005-2006 season in Salt Lake City, Utah and was ranked 3rd overall in the World Rankings! In 2007, Allison won her first U.S. National Championship for speed skating. This year, she’ll be representing the U.S. on the Olympic team in Vancouver.

Allison serves as a great inspiration for all those overcoming obstacles to reach their goals. She’s suffered 5 serious injuries since 2006 but has bounced back from all of them to be fit and ready for this years Olympic games. Go Allison, we’re rooting for you!

Check out Allison on the Team USA page!

We can’t wait for the Olympics! One of our favorite sites, Girls Life Magazine (credit: Taeler Lottino), did a great post on how to Get Motivated by the Olympics! The top ten are from the mag, and we at JAM added two more to get you pumped up! Here’s what you can learn from some of the world’s best competitors…

1. Aim for balance. Take a cue from figure skater Mirai Nagasu, 16, who finds time for school, homework, friends and Japanese classes…plus her intense skating sched. Goodbye, lame TV shows.

2. Ditch excuses. Limb loss, wheelchairs and brain injury don’t stop paralympians from kicking butt in competition. Don’t let the li’l stuff slow ya down.

3. Be unstoppable. In 2006, Lindsey Vonn got right back on the slopes after a major crash. Four years later, she’s a medal fave for women’s Alpine.

4. Forget sibling rivalry. Lots of athletes competing this year were inspired to pick up new sports by watching their sibs. Grab your sis or bro and train for a new activity—together.

5. Stay dedicated. Some world-class athletes travel hundreds of miles for every practice. Makes the 10-minute haul to the Y seem not-so bad, huh?

6. Cross-train like crazy. Skiers don’t swoosh all afternoon and ice skaters aren’t twirling 24/7. Chat up any Olympian and they’ll say weights, jogging, Pilates or yoga are on their weekly to-do list.

7. Forget about age. Just because you’re a few months (or years) younger than your competition doesn’t mean anything. Training with athletes who are slightly more skilled makes you step it up.

8. Have fun. U.S. skeleton athlete Noelle Pikus-Pace tapes funny messages to her sled before races. Hey, it’s just a game. Sometimes you gotta LOL.

9. Share those skills. We love that hockey player Angela Ruggiero runs camps for girls. Take a sec to spill a sporty secret with a younger player.

10. Be a good sport. Even after a mega loss, you’ll see most Olympians hug their rivals. Bringing a fab attitude to your sport makes you stand out, even if ya didn’t land gold. Smile!

11. Stay organized. Olympic athletes have a lot to do! On top of preparing and competeing, they also have press events and have to make time for their friends and family. Being organized and creating lists is a good idea for every busy bee!

12. Think postively. Positive thinking is such a strong force that it can make real change happen. Olympic athletes know that if you an dream it, you can achieve it!

super-bowl-win

Last night, the New Orleans Saints took home a Superbowl win for the first time! Young quarterback, Drew Brees (pictured) led the Saints to a fantastic season and even a greater win over the Colts. The Indianapolis Colts played a good game, but the Saints were able to beat the other team with a final score of 31-17.

The win comes as big morale booster for New Orleans which was hit hard with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The city is still rebuilding from the disaster as most of the homes and building were destroyed from the storm.

The city of New Orleans must be feeling great about the win as they have Mardi Gras coming up next week. It’s going to be a big celebration in Louisiana! Mardi Gras is a big carnival that takes place in the heart of New Orleans. There are lots of parades where beads and candy are tossed into the crowd from spectacular floats.

JAM is celebrating too this month, and we’re celebrating YOU! Enter to win a box of sweet treats! Check it out on the JAM page, here!
