Bad hair days are a part of life. Everyone has them once in a while. Still, you can do something to combat common styling problems. Here are solutions to everyday hair emergencies.

Problem: Hair Raising Static

Solution: Rub a fabric softener sheet from the clothes dryer over your hair. It banishes static instantly. (And it smells good too!)

Problem: Cowlicks

Solution: Wet your cowlick and style it in place. Apply styling wax or pomade to keep it down.

Bonus! Out and about and keep getting fly-aways? Grab some lip gloss and take a pea sized amount to use it as an instant “gel” to put that hair in it’s place!

Problem: Frizz

Solution: Spray hair with a light conditioning spray and let it air dry.

Back To School With JAM-Hair Color or Hair Disaster?

Now that it’s time to go back to school, you may be taking a trip to the salon and thinking of getting something new. Here are a few things to remember before you go:

1. Talk To Your Parents

Your parents have a pretty good idea of what looks best on you and their own rules for dying and cutting. Pull some pictures from magazine, or print them out from online and bring them to a “pre” salon meeting. That way you can compromise and work with them to find something that’s suitable for you.

2. Don’t Rush To Color

Dying your hair has long lasting results–and it’s not just the new color. Sometimes dying or highlighting your hair requires bleaching or other techniques that leave your hair dry and damaged. Be sure that if you want to try out something that you’re ready to keep up with it! That includes touch-ups, keeping it moisturized and healthy.

3. Get The Details

You may think that you need a trim, and it could be true! But be sure to talk with your stylist (and parents) about how much is 1-2 inches. Before you pick a length be very specific and clear about how you want it and what length. If you just say “2-3 inches,” you may end up with your hair shorter than you think!

4. The Stylist is Not a Magician

It’s easy to think that your hair stylist can create whatever you can think up or show them a picture of, but it’s not that easy sometimes. The key is to TALK! TALK! Oh and TALK! Make sure you say exactly how you want it, exactly how long or short and exactly what color you want. The more specific you are, the easier it is for your stylist to give you their professional opinion and give you exactly what you want!

With your body changing, and your hormones doing weird things you might suffer from the occasional break-out. Besides keeping your face healthy and clean by washing and moisturizing, here’s some tips to cover them:

1. Look for a concealer that’s oil free for light blemishes. Some concealers contain acne fighting chemicals like benzyl peroxide. Take a concealer brush and lightly dab the concealer on the spot. Let it set and then blend the edges around the spot lightly. Set it with a loose powder.

2. For more areas that may be red, look for a medium coverage, oil-free foundation. Take a foundation brush and cover the area lightly. Set with a loose powder.

TIP: Never use your fingers or a sponge to spread concealer or foundation, they harbor bacteria and germs! (Ew!)

Be creative this late summer and put together your own lip balm! The girls over at the Imperfect Parent give us a delicious recipe!

lip-balm-rules-ok

Vanilla Butter Bunny Lip Balm

2 tbsp beeswax pellets
2 tbsp 100% shea butter
4 tbsp sweet almond oil
20 drops vanilla oil

Combine first three ingredients in a glass bowl resting over a pot of simmering water, and stir constantly with a small whisk until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla oil. Using a clean medicine dropper, divide the liquid into the individual pots or tins. Let cool for about 20 minutes. You can always decorate each tin with stickers or make up your own creative names for the lip balms. Or, you can just personalize it by writing each girl’s name on them. Then sit back, pucker up and slather on your handy work!

Whether you’re going into high school or going back to middle school, you want to stay fresh and cool. One the cool ways to turn heads this fall is a cool manicure in a cool shade. These styles and colors are hard to miss!

1. Minx

minx22

Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry and other celebrities have been seen around town sporting Minx. With amazing prints like polka dots, metallic gold, and even zebra print, you can make like your own rockstar this fall. It’s a little pricey and lasts for about 3-4 days, but the look is amazing!

 2. Nail Decals

They’re cool and you can even do them yourself!

Start by painting your nails any color you like. Then pick the decal you want to stick on and place it on the nail (After the polish has dried). Put one coat of clear over the nail and you’re all set!

To find the decals try: www.footcandy.com

 3. OPI colors

OPI has really cool colors and one of the lines that were the rave this summer were the Shrek Line Collection. The colors are fun, flirty and perfect for Back To School.

Even if you’re on a budget and want to make your nails “fab” try painting them each a different color, painting one nail a different color, or even adding glitter to one of your favorite shades to make them pop! Whatever you do, make it bold and make it you!

ar_111308_037Dear Marlene,

Hi Marlene what are some great back to school fashions for preteen girls? I’m going school shopping tomorrow
and I really want to be up to date. BTW I’m 12 going to 7th grade.

Here are some designers that cater specifically to the tween:

Stuff by Duff, Hillary Duff

Myley Cyrus and Max Azria for Wal-mart

Mary Kate & Ashley

Selena Gomez

Dear by Amanda Bynes

Jonas Collection by the Jonas Brothers

A lot of tween fashion is recycling styles from the 80’s and early 90’s. Tweens are in some cases taking their “hand-me-downs” and revamping them to represent themselves. Lots of color (neons vs. pastels) is being used and the unkept, ripped jeans, t-shirt and blazer combos are showing up in stores.

Here are some trends to keep you in the know!

    Out- Bright colored jeans

In- Ripped up “boyfriend fit jeans”

    Still Big- Skinny jeans

    Out- Skulls & Bones

In- Sarcastic sayings tees, Flower prints, stripes and bows

Still Big- Sparkles, “Bling,” and Metallics

Out- leggings that look like jeans

In-Leggings & Tights with graphics, lace, or stripes

    Still Big- Metallic leggings

    In-Oversized tees with tanks underneath

    Still Big-Boatneck tees and tanks

Out- Studded or overly accessorized belts

In-Vintage Belts with worn leather, or wear and tear

    Still Big-Wearing a belt over a tunic

    In-Studded/embellished flat sandals

    Still Big-Gladiator flats

    Out-Capris

In- Jeans rolled at the ankle with low-top converse

Still Big – Skinny Jeans or leggings tucked in calf boots and Uggs for a casual look

    Out-Trucker hats

    In-Fedoras

Still Big-head bands and high ponytails, beanies

    In-Silly bands, Pandora Bracelets

    Still Big-Cause bracelets

Dear Marlene,

I’m ten and going into fifth grade. I really, really want to wear makeup to school, but my mom thinks I’m too young. How much makeup do you think is too much for a fifth grader?

Every girl has to negotiate with her parents on how much is “too much.”  One of the best things, I think, is great to start with is a little lip gloss. Remember, when it comes to makeup a little goes a long way. Sheer colors and light stains are the way to go. You’ll look fresh and modern, and they’re easy to apply.

You may happen to see older girls and magazines with girls who have on a lot of makeup, but remember there’s a time and place for everything. Those girls have worked with amazing makeup artists to get a “glam” look to present in a photo. When it comes to real everyday life, even models don’t  pile on the color.

So, the best thing to do is to talk to your mom and see what she thinks is too much and then suggest something simple like lip gloss. If she still says no, she has a really good reason and has your best interest at heart. Respect her wishes and then when she does think you’re old enough, she will know that you are responsible and will probably be happy to help, shop and find you great makeup!
