Eating healthy in the morning is sometimes difficult when you’re on the go or in a rush. Here’s a quick way to grab some wholesome goodness.
Here what you need:
2 pieces of whole wheat bread
1 tsp butter, softened
1-1/2 Tbsp.jam or fruit preserves
Lightly butter both pieces of bread. Spread the jam or preserves (For an extra kick you can replace the jam with Nutella spread or peanut butter) over the butter onto just one piece of bread leaving 1/2 inch border around the edges. Top with the remaining slice of bread. Cut off the crust and seal the two pieces of bread together using the tines of a fork. Slide into the toaster; then your toast is popped!
Between classes, homework and the new season of “Glee” it’s hard to imagine fitting in a fitness routine to stay healthy. Here are 3 Tips to incorporate fitness into your daily routine.
1. Dance! Cheer! or Shake It!
Join a dance team or cheerleading team at your school. Even though it looks fun and exciting, it’s actually A LOT of work! It will give you a chance to make new friends and get a work out at the same time!
2. Say “Oui Oui” (French for Yes!) to Wii!
There are plenty of games on the Wii machine that you get you involved. There’s a dance program and even a specific workout game. It’s fun to play, you can invite your friends and work it out!
3. Swim!
What better way to save a piece of summer and visit your local pool or YMCA and hop in the pool? Swimming is a total body workout and it’s fun!
Thanks for all the overwhelming feedback on how you would change the world! We love those that give back! Here are some cool ideas from readers:
“My idea for making a change in the world is biking! Biking to school can save lots of fuel! If everyone rode there bike to school the air would be less poluted and also, biking is a great way to get some exercise! It gets your heart pumping and its fun! I think more people should bike or walk instead of driving to school.”
-Tori, Colorado
“I would change the education system and the government.”
-Lisa, New Jersey
“Start recycling in my school. I would make sure that we had different bins for paper, bottles and trash.”
-Jen, New York

Watch a video and follow along. There are tons of videos that are available online and you can do a boot camp, a dance routine or even an aerobic exercise. Here’s one that is pretty fun and cool:
Summer is almost over and it’s time to get moving again. No more being a beach bum or a facebook addict (That is unless you’re on the JAM page!).
The researchers at Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee explored the link several years ago and were startled to find that kids’ metabolisms were lower while they were watching television than when they were resting and doing nothing at all. According to them, the typical teen now spends almost 30 hours a week in front of the tube, while eating junk food.
Now is the best time for you to get into a routine to keep your body in tip-top shape. Remember, it’s not about being skinny, but being healthy. One of the best activities you can do that is fun and productive: Run/Walk!
Top 3 Reasons Why:
1. It’s convenient! You can even grab a friend and make it a weekly activity to catch up on the latest shows or swap clothing trends while running. Plus, talking slows your pace, so you’ll exercise longer!
2. You’ll feel great afterwards! A good run is a way to release all the stresses from the day, think about your goals and plans and burn calories at the same time. There’s nothing like running that “C” off in Bio, to give you motivation to push that grade to an “A”!
3. It’s a total body workout! You will look amazing just after a few weeks of running. Every time you work-out you build muscles and strength. And that diet? You can forget about it! Your metabolism will burn extra fat for hours after running! How’s that for a perfect work-out plan?
Even if you don’t decide to run, think about doing some sort of exercise to keep your metabolism up and keep your body in shape. It’s important to stay healthy and active!
Here’s something that’s interesting, JAM girls. In the media nowadays, we hear a lot about how we can become healthier by losing weight. “Healthy” has come to mean “skinny” (and when we see someone who’s overweight, we tend to assume that they’re not healthy). But do those two words necessarily mean the same thing?
Short answer: NO.
Being skinny does not mean that you’re necessarily healthy. The Seattle Times published an article about a man who ate almost exclusively junk food but still maintained a weight of 120 lbs. “A typical lunch is two Big Macs, large fries and a Coke. He often wolfs down a full pizza for dinner.” While most people would describe him as “healthy” because of his weight, the fact is that he’s depriving himself of the nutrients (and probably the exercise) necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
So don’t count on the BMI chart to tell you if you’re healthy. Instead, ask yourself:
- Am I eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein, dairy, and carbohydrates?
- Am I getting at least 30-45 minutes of exercise every day?
- Am I taking a multivitamin to ensure that I’m getting the proper dose of vitamins and minerals?
Similarly, don’t judge anyone who’s overweight (including yourselves, plus size girls!). There’s a growing movement saying that you CAN be plus size and healthy. If you’re maintaining a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise regime, then stop looking at the scale!
America’s Next Top Model made a great point about how models need to be form-conscious. You need to be aware of your body and how it moves. And the best way to increase that awareness could be through dance lessons.
If you want to have a fierce walk on the runway someday, you could probably benefit from taking a few dance lessons. Ballet might be the best for enhancing poise and confidence. You can make yourself look longer, leaner, and more graceful with only a few basic classes.
There are other benefits to dancing as well. A study has recently shown that dancing will actually make you smarter as you get older. And women benefit more than men because, if you’re dancing with someone else, you need to learn how to interpret his movements and follow them. Ballroom (or social) dancing might be the best for improving memory function. Ballroom also happens to be my favorite kind of dancing! What can beat out the tango or the lambada? How about some triple-time swing? Plus: who doesn’t want to wear the sequined and feathered gowns that you see at competitions? (Don’t know what I’m talking about? Rent Baz Luhrmann’s “Strictly Ballroom” and check out the gowns that they’re wearing at the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix!)
