Homework can be one of the biggest sources of stress in a kid’s life. It doesn’t have to be. Getting organized is the best thing you can do to reduce anxiety and improve your grades. Your most important tool is a daily planner or diary (I never leave home without mine), where you can write all your assignments and when they are due.

You should pick the same time every day when you do your homework–it can be before your afternoon snack or right after dinner, whenever you work best. That way homework becomes a daily ritual.

Check the assignments off on your daily planner as you do them. You won’t believe the feeling of accomplishment you’ll have when you see all those neat check marks!

Hi Marlene!

I have a major problem that I really need to sort out.  Whenever I speak to a grown adult, they ask me what I want to be when I am older? At first I just gave them the same answer ‘I dont know,’ but one day my mum asked me the question, and when I said the answer, she got a bit upset and said that I need to find out because I’m going to be 9 and this is the time for me to be working on towards what I want to be. All my other friends know what they want to be, and  it kind of frustrates me.

For a couple of days I’ve been taking some job quizzes online to see what I can be, but they were all boring and I didnt want to be any of them. I’m a fun, creative person, I’m more practical, and I love excitement. I would love a job that I could get up and say, ‘I Love my Job’!

Please can you help me?!

First of all, Don’t worry! Not knowing what you really want to do right now is okay! Even if you do find something,  you can change your mind a hundred times even before you reach high school! Pick something that’s seems fun and would be interesting to you.

You may even find something in your every day tasks! For example, do you like putting together outfits and getting dressed for school, maybe you would like a career in fashion. How about buildings and skyscrapers? Do you like how they are designed and built? You could be interested in architecture or engineering. Even while you’re in school, what’s your favorite subject? Art? History? Maybe, you even want to teach!

Not to confuse you, but there are a world of opportunities when it comes to picking a career. Over the next few years you will come across many different ideas and subjects and one day, one of them will interest you so much, you’ll say, “Now, I can do that”!

Dear Marlene!-I Want To Do A Fashion Show!

Hi Marlene,

I want to do a fashion show to raise money to help animals, or children, or my community, but I don’t have the money to buy clothes and it is still being decided, plus I don’t know if any one of my friends will want to it..It still hasn’t been decided but I want to do it. What should I do?

What a great idea! Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Find the organization that you want to help. You can pick a large one like PETA or a small animal shelter in your neighborhood. Or Big Brothers Big Sisters or kids who are sick in your local hospital. What you decide is up to you. When you find one you like, contact them and let them know your plans to do a fashion show. They may be willing to donate, time, money or even promotional materials to help out with your show.

2. Find a place to host the show. Your local YMCA, your school’s auditorium or you can find a local retailer who may be willing to let you use their space!

3. Apply for a grant with DoSomething.Org. They give out grants to teens and tweens to start projects in their communities. In the meantime. Ask for donations from family and friends. Tell them that a portion will go to charity and the other to the shows planning.

4. Find the clothes! Ask local retailers or you can even go to the thrift store to save on costs and put together your own outfits. One bag could cost you less than $20!

Dear Marlene!-What’s My Style?

Dear Marlene,

I always see models who have the coolest clothes. They always dress nice and sometimes I feel like my clothes aren’t as nice or cool. How can I stay in style and create a new look?

Have you ever wondered why models look so amazing in fashion magazines? Well, it’s easy for them. They are surrounded by a team of professionals who create their look, from their carefully blown-out hair to their perfectly pedicured toes. There’s one person to apply the make-up, one for hair, and there’s even someone to pick out the clothes! You can look just as amazing without relying on a an entourage of assistants. You are special–with a style that’s all your own.  It’s not about fitting in but rocking your own style that fits you best.

One day pull out all over your favorite clothes. Keep those separate. Then, get out the things that are so/so in your book and put them in a pile. Finally, get all the things you don’t like. Go through that pile and give away what you really don’t like anymore and then keep a few that you can integrate with the pile that’s so/so. You never know you may create a new look that you love. Have a try-on session in the mirror and make your own runway!

Once you find things that you like, you have created your own style! Wear it proudly!

“My idea for making a change in the world is biking! Biking to school can save lots of fuel! If everyone rode there bike to school the air would be less poluted and also, biking is a great way to get some exercise! It gets your heart pumping and its fun! I think more people should bike or walk instead of driving to school.”
-Tori, Colorado

“I would change the education system and the government.”
-Lisa, New Jersey

“Start recycling in my school. I would make sure that we had different bins for paper, bottles and trash.”

Back To School With JAM-Modeling!

So you want to be a model? One of the best things to do is to prepare yourself! Here are three tips to put yourself in the right place!

1. Get Involved!

The best way to get into modeling or acting without paying an extreme amount of money is by getting involved in performing arts in your school and community. Join the drama, glee or even dance teams and practice using your talent. Also you can approach retail stores in your area about fashion shows or advertisements that they may have that you can be involved in.

2. Know Your Market!

When looking to get your pictures done, remember that photographers’ styles differ by region. How a photographer shoots in LA may be different than one in New York. If you’re going to interview with an agency in New York, don’t get your pictures taken in Minneapolis. You should take a look at the different styles of photographers and agencies and target yourself according to their needs and wants. Some like it flashy and some like it nice & clean. Knowing the difference will help you out on your search!

3. Keep Your Grades in Check

Although it may be fun to have a career at a young age, it’s important to keep your grades up. Being a model is more than just taking pictures, it’s a lot of hard work and dedication. Because of that, you want to make sure you’re putting the same effort in your schoolwork. A lot of kid models are at the top of their class and that also helps them to be able to participate in modeling. If your parents think you can’t handle your schoolwork, it may be difficult to handle your modeling career also!

Dear Marlene,

Whenever I am auditioning for modeling and acting I get extremely nervous and stiff. What should I do?

Two things: The first thing you should do is practice in the mirror at home and the other is to do jumping jacks before going into the room to audition.

Practicing in the mirror, allows you to see yourself and get comfortable speaking and auditioning. By see yourself, you build confidence in yourself and that will show when you are modeling or auditioning.

Doing jumping jacks is a way to loosen up and get your nerves calm. Performers all have something that they do to get the nerves out. Even people who deliver speeches sometimes go through a series of activities to get them prepared: Mouth exercises,  practicing vocal pitch, exercising their arms and legs and even neck stretches to get them loose and ready to speak or perform.

Our August JAM VIP, Lauren Legato, performs all the time and she going to give us her advice and tips that help her before she goes out in front of thousands! Be sure to check the JAM VIP section of JustAskMarlene.com.

TIP of the day: The best way to get into modeling or acting without paying an extreme amount of money is by getting involved in performing arts in your school and community. Join the drama, glee or even dance teams and practice using your talent. Back-to-School Inspiration

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Click Here To Go Back To JAM!

It’s almost time to go back to school and now is the best time to get prepared!

One of the things you can do is create a mood board! Most designers have a wall in their studio covered with photos of male and female models, scenes of beach sunsets, fabric swatches, art images and other things that inspire. Whenever something strikes them as interesting they constantly add to the collage of images.

For your back to school inspiration, you can create a couple “mood” boards. One for fashion and beauty, one for school or inspiration for your studies, or even one for future goals. Grab some magazines, books and other things that inspire you and grab a posterboard. Cut out everything that you like. Pictures, sayings, ads, fabric, anything that’s unique to you! Post them on the posterboard and mount it somewhere in your room! Now you have instant inspiration to see everyday!

You can even find cool quotes, like here at: www.quotegarden.com, type them up in cool colors and post them either on your board or around your room, even the mirror!

Here are some that I found and love:

Meet Shannon Tavarez

I wish I was introducing you to the amazingly talented, 11 year old Shannon Tavarez under different circumstances.

stavarez2001

Unfortunately, The Lion King on Broadway star, found out this April that she has leukemia.

Beating out hundreds of hopefuls last year, Tavarez was cast as “Nala,” and performed for six months before having to halt her budding career.

Right now she needs a bone marrow transplant and hasn’t found a match. Her physician, Dr. Larry Wolfe, of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York, says the task of finding her a match are harder than it seems. Tavarez’s mother if of African-American descent and her father is Hispanic.  The donors of minorities and people with mixed origin are few and far in between.

Done by a simple cheek swab, the DKMS (Bone Marrow registry) can process a registrant simply by mail. If you’re between the ages of 18-55, it’s simple to sign up, one of the JAM team members filled out the registration and it literally took less than ten minutes to fill out the form, swab the cheeks and send the package back. Here’s a link to read about Shannon and how to become a donor:

It’s hard to deal with an illness like cancer, but with the support and love from friends and family, it sometimes helps the bad things not seem so bad anymore. Tavarez has lots of love and support from her cast, friends and families and even other Broadway show friends like “Wicked.” Do you have someone that is going through something difficult? Like maybe a death in the family, or even an illness? If you do, sometimes one of the best things you can give, is a smile and a phone call. Check on them often, or send a card–you can even click below to print out cool JAM downloads to decorate!
