This week some great sites used Marlene’s modeling and tween lifestyle expertise for their sites!
Child Mode, a great resource for all things fashion & style for children and teens, met up with Marlene in L.A. where she sat on the panel of judges at the Next Direct & Wilhelmina Children’s Model Competition. (Stay tuned on the JAM Blog to hear more about the Next Direct Competition!)
Editor of Child Mode, Nadia Carriere, looked to Marlene as an expert in the child modeling industry. When asked what Marlene looks for in a child model, she commented, “When I meet with aspiring models, the first thing I am struck by is their natural beauty and the twinkle in their eyes.” Read the rest of Marlene’s interview on Child Mode, HERE!
Popular family site, Savvy Auntie, also looked to Marlene for an expert story. The May article, “Celebrate The End Of The School Year With Your Nieces And Nephews,” highlights 5 great activities for teens and their parents & mentors to do before the school year comes to an end. Check out the 5 fun activities, HERE!

Last night the 2 hour long American Idol special called “Idol Gives Back,” aired on FOX. During the two hour event, Idol was able to raise over $15 Million for charity! Wow, that’s really giving back.
Idol donated to worldwide charities such as the Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More and the United Nations Foundation.
Carrie Underwood, Elton John, Queen Latifah, George Lopez, Mary J. Blige and Alicia Keys were just some of the stars to lend their help (and voices!) to the big event.
Did you watch the big event last night? What did you think? What have you been doing in YOUR community to give back? It’s a great time to after all, it is Earth Day! xoxo

Happy Earth Day!

Today marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day– a day designed to inspire appreciation and awareness for the Earth’s environment.
Giving back is an essential part of feeling great. Helping people less fortunate than you and making the world a better place are essential components to a happy life. It’s true! Being a well-rounded person means that charity work has a place next to hanging out with friends and enjoying hobbies. You’ll be suprised how great it feels to focus on the needs of others. It offers a sense of satistaction you can’t find any other way.
There are many simple ways you can help out your environment like planting a flower in your community, organizing a trash clean up around your school, or recycling!
Check out the EcoKids site, HERE, for more great projects you can do to help out the Earth!

A popular hair product company, Goody, is also helping out the Earth. All you have to do is buy a Goody Down to Earth or Eco Movement hairbrush! The Eco Movement collection of hairbrushes are made of all natural bamboo, which gives the line strong, durable styling tools. The Down To Earth collection has a natural wood design and its brushes are great for any hair style or length! The Goody Eco Movement and Down To Earth collections are available at Walmart stores nationwide starting at $6.50

Last Wednesday, I attended a lovely dinner to benefit the Graham Windham Services, a non-profit, non-sectarian agency in New York City providing child care, foster care, mental health and early childhood services.
The event was held at the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I had a lovely time and got to catch up with friends.
Famous photo journalist, Bill Cunningham, was there to take some great photographs and compile them into the events of the week for the New York Times. You can see me with some of my close friends in the photo, above!
You can check out all of Cunningham’s photos of the week, here on the Style section of the New York Times under ‘Evening Hours: Tulip Time.’

Cool Women, Hot Jobs

As President of Wilhelmina Kids & Teens and founder of JustAskMarlene, I enjoy getting the chance to reach out to young girls and speak about confidence, self-esteem and being the best you can be. This morning I got a unique opportunity to speak at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Brooklyn, New York at Career Day 2010. The Young Women’s Leadership Program (TYWLS) was the first all-girls public school to open in the nation in at last twenty-five years. The school was established in 1996 in Harlem to serve inner city young women who previously did not have the choice or access to thrive in a single-gender environment.
There now are 4 different Young Women’s Leadership Schools located across New York City and Philadelphia. I got the chance to speak at the Brooklyn location this morning to a vibrant group of 6th and 7th grade girls. I teamed up with Kym Hampton of the New York Liberty to speak about our career paths.
The “Cool Women, Hot Jobs” Career Day was designed to present female role models to share wisdom, advice, and experiences from college and the workforce. Kym (Hampton) and I were just two of the MANY amazing women who came out to speak about their jobs. Almost every career path was covered, from an Estee Lauder Makeup Chemist to a Civil Engineer to a Women’s Basketball Star!
This school is doing amazing things by giving every girl a chance to thrive. The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem sent 100% of their students to college! Wow, what a fantastic movement to be a part of!
