clip_image001511) Michael Sarver-I don’t get it. I assume people will keep voting for him, because that’s the way it goes with the consensus worst singer left on Idol. His attitude didn’t help him last night, either.

10) Scott MacIntyre-Scott’s a good dude and a great piano player. He’s just not a good singer. His voice is like sand paper, old-fashioned and raw and not a lot of fun to listen to.

9) Alexis Grace-I don’t know what happened here. I thought Alexis would kill the country week. “Jolene” seemed like a good song choice, but she just never found a groove, and that’s why America didn’t decide to keep her around.

8) Megan Corkrey- It’s kind of hard to judge this one, given that the couple rough spots can be attributed to the flu. I’m always going to love Megan’s voice, and she’s REALLY cute, so I give this one a pass.

7) Lil’ Rounds-Terrible song choice. No sane person wanted Lil to sing country when she could have busted out another R&B tune. This will either set up a resurgence for Lil next week, or will be the beginning of the end.

6) Allison Iraheta-I might be in the minority here, but I feel like Allison’s performances have gotten progressively worse. Not by a lot, and she’s still good, but it’s a disturbing trend.

5) Danny Gokey-I definitely was not a big fan of his coat.  Danny picked an emotional song and sang the heck out of its chorus. But – to win American Idol you’re going to have to sing the whole song well. danny

4) Adam Lambert-sang a really altered version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” Whether you liked this version or not, this guy can sing! He was note perfect and when the back ground singer joins in at the end, it was great! And I’ve been really hard on Adam every week but this week he TOTALLY won me over.  I couldn’t believe it was even the same song.

adam

3) Kris Allen-That was a hell of a way to come back from last week, and with the confidence to not use the guitar. “Tender moments form my tender Dog.” Kris might be a sleeper in this thing. “Tender moments form my tender Dog”

kris

2)Anoop Desai-he tackled the Willie Nelson classic “You Were Always On My Mind” and I was really happy to see Anoop taking song choice seriously and showing off the vocals that got him past the auditions. Simon said that Anoop went from “Zero to Hero” and said that it was one of his favorite performances of the night. ANOOP DOG!anoop

1) Matt Giraud-Matt gave maybe the best performance of the season last night, and I see no reason why he can’t keep giving that kind of performance throughout the season. He’s my early pick to win it all!

American Idol Season 8 Top 11 Review and Predictions

clip_image0014

They entered the Idol-dome as giddy teens and twenty-something’s, but after their first “American Idol” elimination night they walked out a little older, a little wiser and one giant step further down the road that will ultimately, before this season is done, reshape each one of these young warriors and their lives beyond recognition.

It is a coming of age rite, each season’s young dreamers must undergo; a maturation process administered at the hands of Ryan Seacrest.

On Thursday night, the 11 chosen were bouncing off the walls with excitement.  Called forth from the millions who auditioned, they at last stood on the stage of their dreams. They moved into an enormous multiple hot tub-equipped mansion as they prepare for the long road ahead.

Here is my review for the Top 11 Idol Hopefuls

american-idol_l

  1. Lil’ Rounds - seems very comfortable on the big stage as the mother of 3 sings “The Way You Make Me Feel”. Pretty good performance. I’m not sure what Simon meant when he said “a bit of a lazy song choice” – I thought the song choice showed some personality. She should cruise to the top 3
  2. Scott McIntyresings “Keep the Faith”. His piano playing is much better than his voice since he’s rarely on pitch. He has such a heartwarming story, but I just don’t think he’s a great singer. Did Paula just say that the album Dangerous was the top selling album in Norway? FYI – Norway has a population just larger than Los Angeles. 4,644,457
  3. Danny Gokeyawesome! Loved the performance – one of the best singers in the history of Idol so far. It’s hard not to like this guy. Simon makes fun of his dancing, but Danny has a great sense of humor about it. He should make the top 3 on personality alone.
  4. Michael Sarverokay singer, but seemed so serious. The singing oil rigger performs “You Are Not Alone.” He was good, but not good enough to make the top 10. Being a nice guy isn’t going to cut it.
  5. Kris Allenokay performance. I agreed with Simon when he said that “the song didn’t really seem to fit the guitar because it seemed a little drowned out.” He actually gets good judges reviews and a comparison to Jason Mraz.
  6. Allison Irahetafor 16, she can sing pretty well!
  7. Anoop Desaihe has such a fun name to say, which makes Randy happy—ANOOP DOG!! And Slumdog Millionaire has turned the world on its Jai Ho(song form the end credits) ear. Anoop Dog WILL be in the house!
  8. Megan Joy Corkerybad song choice but she’s actually pretty adorable as she sings. Awful ending with the “caw caw” too, but I still like her and hope she makes it to the top 3.
  9. Adam Lamberthe has great stage presence and seems to be the judges’ fave right now.
  10. Matt Giraudbeautiful voice. I agree with Paula and Kara that he kind of has the whole Justin Timberlake vibe goin’ on.
  11. Alexis Gracesounded like something I could’ve heard at a club or a lounge…not great.

spkmixedI am so lucky to live in NYC where I often get invited to meaningful events. Last week there was an event hosted by Spirituality for Kids - www.sfk.org, an organnization which teaches kids about tools for life that help to end the cycle for children at risk. While I was not able attend, Nicole Katz went in my place – she has written about her experience and how it has changed her to be more socially aware.  I want to thank Nicole for being our jam guest blogger this week.

Let me know about things you are doing to make a difference in the lives of others.             spkblack

On Sunday afternoon, I attended a special benefit Spirituality for Kid (SFK). SFK “Teaches kids the tools for life to end the cycle of conflict for children at risk – emotionally, physically, and spiritually. It begins by teaching the tools that will help them realize their full potential and change the course for them and future and generations”. I had the pleasure of meeting fashion designer, Donna Karan who has been very involved with SFK over the years. The event was so inspiring that I have decided to become an SFK volunteer. If I can make a difference in someone else’s life it will make me very happy and it will be very uplifting.–Nicole Katz

Role models are an important part of growing up, but in today’s celebrity-obsessed society, too often they’re inappropriate idols. We want to celebrate one of our favorite teenage celebrities, Taylor Swift and welcome her to JAM’S ROLE MODEL HALL OF FAME.  In her recent quote in Tiger Beat , she encourages girls to reflect on their individual styles and sense of self. She is truly a positive role model and we welcome her as our first member!!

“The best thing you can do in school is to not try to be too cool. My friends and I took pride in the fact that we were the weirdest girls at our school. We never fit in with the cool girls because we didn’t really care what people thought. We had so much fun goofing off and being crazy. We would go out to dinner in our prom dress, accessorized with scarves, fingerless gloves and costume jewelry. Sometimes we’d draw a beauty mark on our faces, wear a tiara and funny slippers. We didn’t care!” - Taylor Swift
