Not just a pretty face

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Would you believe one of our JAM Moms was reading about TALIA LEMAN our youth philanthropist on the VIP page  when this proud mother realizes that  RandomKid  was  the same organization her daughter Cosette –  raised      $ 1400 dollars for. We wanted to share her letter with you as  it’s another reminder that jam kids are making the world a better place!

Hi Marlene!

I know that we’ve often talked about my girls accomplishments.  However, a couple of things were sparked in a recent JAM article.  Last Spring, in an attempt to discard 8 years of accumulated  “junk” out of our garage, my now 13 year old, Aitana  (a Wilhelmina model)  decided to put an end to not only a cluttered garage, but  to a cause which had constantly sparked her interest in her many trips to  Manhattan (she was faced by billboards at the LIRR station).  She wanted to make a difference.  She put together a garage sale/ lemonade  stand to raise money for “The Smile Train”.  A cause which for $250  you can pay for a cleft pallet  operation to give a child a smile. I would like to say that my beautiful, smart 13 year old is also a  humanitarian, however there was an alteriar motive.  She had also  calculated, as any self absorbed teenager would, that she would indeed  take the rest of the proceeds to fund her own cause, a new ipod!

On another note, my 9 year old, Cosette (a Wilhelmina Model) got involved in a cause of her own.  She became a “Random Kid” unbeknownst to me until the day that she was not only honored with an award but also featured in  several news articles.  I’m so proud of her raising $1600 for the  Cause by selling water bottles whose labels were actually designed by  “her”. She and her other 4 classmates (with the guidance of  Ms. Pinto)  raised enough to supply an African village with a water pump for  running water to be available in their village.  No ulterior motive!

Brings me to my 3rd and final daughter, Talia (also a Wilhelmina  Model). So far, idolizes her sister, Cosette At age 6, still too  early to pass judgment. But I have high hopes!  Yolanda Rinab aka mom

Talk about Self-Esteem! Meet Hollie Steel

Video link- Britain\’s Got Talent / Hollie Steel brit-talent

We know most of you have seen the Susan Boyle YouTube video last week. Following her sensational appearance on Britain’s Got Talent two weeks ago, Susan Boyle, has been tipped to win this year’s show. JAM SAYS WAIT A MINUTE!! Susan has another challenge in the form of ten-year-old Hollie Steel.

The JAM staff thinks Hollie Steel is one of the most confident self assured girls we have ever witnessed! We are sure she was nervous getting in front of that huge audience and of course the judges, especially Simon! But watch her as she gets her composure and just lets that beautiful voice shine!

She is a great example of why it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and reaching for the stars. We wish her the best of luck in the competition and we would like to make her an honorary JAM role model. Hollie everyone at Jam wishes you the best of luck and keeps sharing that beautiful voice with the world! Now listen and to Hollie and let us know what you think.

XOXO

SPRING COLLECTION AT NEW YORK ’S LEADING DESIGN SCHOOL

Monday, April 20th, 2009

marlene20parson27s20student20collection20spring202009-resized1

A dear friend and collegue of mine, Francesca Sammaritano, the Director of Faculty at Parsons Design School in NYC, invited me to be a guest-judge for the 2009 Spring Senior Fashion Collection – and what a collection of talent it was. (yeah – that’s me standing in front of student’s the collections)

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Parsons, it’s a highly accredited design school in the Big Apple that offers many programs of study including fashion, interior, and industrial design.  Every single one of the designers had something very exciting going on, but the thing that was really cool was getting an understanding of where they get their inspirations from.  A young sportswear designer got her inspiration from mood Crystals.   Her collection was comprised of funky leggings and blousy sweaters with patchwork, sparkles and spandex– most of her pieces could even be worn inside out!  One designer talked about her idea spawning from the concept of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – (a classic story about a doctor with two personalities).

I would absolutely love to hear from you with your ideas for an original design collection.  Let me know what your design ideas are, and whether they are clothing, jewelry, home design or even table top – a collection of dishes.  The TOP 3 design ideas will be announced and posted on www.justaskmarlene.com.

***Entries will be accepted until May 20th, 2009, so send in your ideas ASAP (as soon as possible)***

And so now we are down to American Idols Season 8 – TOP 7

Matt Giraud gets his second save to stay in the top 7 this week with a lifeline from the judges. He made this season’s Top 13 only after he was chosen as a wildcard during the show’s semifinal rounds.

  1. Matt Giraud, “To Really Love Woman”- SAVED so happy! I love Matt! He’s not the best but it’s not time for him to go! It was not as good as Brian Adams of course, but that is not Matt’s style. It was a little pitchy but for the most part it was very good.

  1. Adam Lambert “Born to be Wild”- Not his best performance but Adam is a true artist & performer. His range is crazy; one week theatrical, the next Rocker & the next classical. Safe till the end. Def top 2=) What a talent….Go Adam!

  1. Allison Iraheta“I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”- This was not her best by a long shot.  Still think she’s awesome! I feel like she’s the 16 yr old girl version of Chris Daughtry. Love Allison….I think she is great! Def top 2=)

  1. Danny Gokey “Endless Love”- Everytime Danny sings it’s heartfelt. You can see his heart through his eyes; his passion through his voice.

  1. Kris Allen-“Falling Slowly”- - okay performance. I agreed with Simon when he said that “the song didn’t really seem to fit the guitar because it seemed a little drowned out.” He actually gets good judges reviews and a comparison to Jason Mraz.

  1. Lil’ Rounds- “The Rose”- Ya know I really think they give Lil a hard time every week. I did think it was a bit pitchy but overall I thought she carried it out well. I think she’s talented & will hopefully take constructive criticism & SHINE next week.

  1. Anoop Desai -“Every Thing I Do, I Do It For You”- I actually thought he did very well but I get bored with him

If I had to make a prediction for next week, I’d say Anoop & Lil are going home. At this point of the competition we all want to see the head to head showdown between the BEST for the next American Idol

Jam wants to know what you favorite Idols are & Predictions for next week are when 2 Idols go home…..

I want to thank all the parents and kids for attending the Open Call on Friday. I was outside in the pouring rain talking to the aspiring models while they were waiting to meet with my staff at the Wilhelmina Kids & Teens 2009 Annual Open Call.  We were talking about why they want to be a model and about the models life.  I talked to them about the Tween/Teen  Lifestyle Collection (TLC) and www.justaskmarlene.com – the book series/website all about empowerment and having your beauty shine from the inside out.  What’s special about them is they allow girls to feel included instead of executed whether or not they actually ever become a model.

I have been perched on my throne as President of Wilhelmina Kids & Teens for over a decade and I knew there was something meaningful in all that seems superficial.  For me, it was to use my voice of authority in the world of modeling to empower girls to be the best they can be and have their beauty shine through.  The road through adolescence can be a bumpy one but if one girl takes one idea from the www.justaskmarlene.com site and the books I am sure it will help them to champion the path and become a confident young adult – the world is changed forever.

Tips for Going to an Open Call!

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

The Annual  Wilhelmina Open Call is this Friday!

Inside Scoop on Going to an Open Call!

11879649211765-main_full1

Three most important things:

1)    Make sure you have a good night sleep the night before the Open Call. A late night will always show up on your face the next day – especially in photographs – the camera never lies.

2)    Clean Clean Clean – clean face, clean hair, clean nails.  We do not want to see someone with tons of makeup, oily hair and dirty nails.  It’s just not becoming.

3)    What to Wear – you can never loose with GAP casual.  You never know the taste of the person you’re meeting with is going to be so clean fresh looking clothes always work.

Once you’ve got those things down – the rest is all about personality.  Speak up when the agent asks your name and age.  And smile – it’s a great asset.  It might sound corny but have a joke ready to tell if there’s time – just ask – can I tell you a joke?  Most of all take deep breathes and regardless of the outcome – know you’re the best you can be.

 XOXO

Marlene
