NOTHING SAYS HOLIDAY LIKE SPARKLES – IT’S SO MUCH FUN

Monday, December 21st, 2009

evening_shoes_03

The Holiday Season gives you poetic license (that means you can do what you want and break the rules a little) to dress up in the most festival and playful way you want.   One of the things that I like best for parties are sparkles – sparkles say holiday fun.  Whether its sparkles woven into a sweater or a scarf, or one of those decorative clips on your shoes, sparkles say holiday in a big way.  If you don’t have any sparkly clothes, you can buy iron-on decals to dress up your look.

Sparkles can also be part of your beauty routine.  Lots of girls have sparkly nail polish and even sparkle on their face in little clusters on their cheeks. You can also wear a sparkly hair ornament – AND BINGO – you’re in the holiday spirit.

Sparkles always help create a fun, festive holiday look!

Family Affair

With the Holidays finally here, it’s important be thankful for the people who love and support you – your family! Use this as a reminder to value and talk to your family and friends all year long. Good communication starts at home, and it can start with you! Take a leadership role by organizing monthly meetings with your family to keep talk open, honest, and current.

Get it on the calendar: The first step, and the hardest for most families, is finding a date and time when everyone can meet. Once you find one that works for everyone, mark it on a wall calendar. Make the meeting place around the dinner table, or any space where the entire gang will feel comfortable.

Listen up: The family meeting isn’t a solo performance. Let other people finish what they are saying without interrupting. Be interested in what others are talking about. It’s especially nice to ask about events that have happened, like how your mom’s big meeting went or if your brother aced his math exam. Your attention means a lot to everyone, even your folks!

Grown-up behavior: If you are mature enough to start these meetings, then you have to be mature enough to participate in a grown-up way. Your sister might say something hurtful- that can happen when people are speaking about deep and true feelings. When that happens – and it will if everyone is honest – don’t immediately react. That means don’t scream, throw chairs, or have a fit. Take a deep breath, or three, and hear your family member out.

Enjoy the Holiday!

What Colors Should You Wear?

Nothing affects mood quite like color. But do you ever think about what colors your wear and why? Use this guide to see what colors suit your hair, eye, and skin tones best!

Blondes with blue or green eyes: Earth tones such as browns, golds, yellows, and greens are a natural way to go with this coloring.

Brunettes or blondes with pinkish skin tone: Pastels – whether pink, blue, or yellow – make this skin glow. Pastels in floral patterns are equally lovely. Patterns are nice to consider for this group.

Brunettes or redheads with freckles: Orange – a color that not everyone can wear – looks awesome on these girls. Dark yellow, green, and beige make excellent accent colors.

Dark brown with olive skin: This group shines in colors that have a splash of shimmering gold, brown, or dark purple.

Dark brown or black hair with dark skin: Go for bold colors – but don’t go overboard. Shades of gold, purple, pink, and blue look great with darker complexions.

Not sure what you want for the Holidays this year? Read below to learn more about the BooksAreGreatGifts campaign!

Book publishers and retailers have joined forces for the second year behind BooksAreGreatGifts, an effort to reach holiday shoppers with the message that the most entertaining, loving, and thoughtful gift is a good book.

An industry-wide initiative coordinated by the Association of American Publishers, BooksAreGreatGifts is built around three promotional videos featuring some of the country’s most popular and prolific authors sharing their own reasons why books make great gifts. This year’s campaign features authors Julie Andrews & Emma Walton, Alec Baldwin, Glenn Beck, Valerie Bertinelli, Dan Brown, Sandra Boynton, Meg Cabot, Eoin Colfer, Steve Doocy, Stephen Fry, Neil Gaiman, Nick Hornby, A.J. Jacobs, Emeril Lagasse, Elmore Leonard, John Lithgow, Howie Mandel, Kevin Nealon, Al Roker, Jeff Smith, Daniel Steel, Peter Yarrow, and Mo Willems.

The videos are designed to support book retailers as they approach the upcoming holiday season with cautious optimism on a wave of newly released bestsellers. The videos will be available for online viewing at BooksAreGreatGifts.com, Barnes & Noble.com, IndieBound.com, Borders.com and Amazon.com, and can be streamed  here on YouTube.

“Book publishers and retailers are collaborating to share a single message: books are simply the best gift you can give to anyone on your holiday list.  This is a message that we hope will resonate not only during the holidays but throughout the year,” said AAP President and CEO Tom Allen. Pointing out that a good book can be enjoyed in many ways-in print, on an e-reader on an I-Phone, Mr. Allen noted: “They’re the logical choice in tough economic times when shoppers want the most for their money.”  The same theme is wryly repeated by Newbery Prize-winning author Neil Gaiman in his video clip:  “Books make great gifts because they have whole worlds inside them, and it’s much cheaper to buy somebody a book, than it is to buy them the whole world.”
