The Ladies Free Skate took place last night in Vancouver at the Winter 2010 Olympic games. Earlier in the week, the women showed off their skills in the short program, but last night they pulled out all the stops to deliver memorable routines to the excited arena crowd.

Americans Mirai Nagasu and Rachael Flatt had solid programs but fell a bit short of the podium. Mirai took 4th overall and Rachael took 7th.

The three top placing Olympians were Yu-Na Kim from Korea, Mao Asada from Japan and Joannie Rochette from Canada. Joannie’s performance was heartfelt and captivating as she skated in memory of her mother who passed away just a day before she was to deliver her short program at the Olympic games. The Canadian crowd rallied around Joannie to motivate her into a Bronze medal finish. What a strong young athlete! Go, Joannie!

The games were really exciting to watch yesterday. In just a few days the 2010 Winter Olympics will be wrapping up in Vancouver but we can always learn from the discipling and dedication these athletes posses and how to apply it in our own lives. CLICK HERE to check out our tips & trick on how to go for the gold like an Olympian!

Tell us what you think! What is your favorite sport to watch in the Olympic games??

Yet another big snow storm has hit the East Coast today! New York City alone has gotten almost 16 inches.. and it’s still snowing! Kids in New York City, New Jersey and across the East Coast were given the gift of a snow day… so enjoy!

You may decide to bundle up and brave the cold to make some snowmen and snowangels but we bet a lot of you want to stay inside on a day like today.  Well, if you’re sitting at home, you can still have lots of fun! Here are some simple, fun ideas to do on your snow day…

* Get crafty! You can start working on creating your sleep sanctuary in your bedroom. Our VIP, Mark Cutler, had some great ideas on how to turn your room into a fabulous reflection of you. You can start with something as simple as creating your own “mood wall” with pictures and objects that inspire you to find your unique style. Read more about finding your style in My Look: A Guide to Fashion & Style and more about creating your own sleep sanctuary in My Life: A Guide to Health & Fitness, both in the My Tween Lifestyle Collection.

* Invite some friends over and have a spa day! Gather some healthy snacks, lots of fun nail polish and raid the kitchen for an at-home version of a fabulous spa. Using ingredients from your kitched like yogurt & honey, you can create a rich mask that super easy and will leave even the driest skin super-hydrated. Just add a tablespoon of both yogurt & honey into a bowl, mix, apply to your face and oila! Soft, smooth skin! kidsscience

JAM girls,

Science is all about exploring and experimenting with things to find out how things work. You never know what you might learn from creating your own experiment! It can be a lot of fun! PBS knows that girls love science and created a new show called, SciGirls. Have YOU been watching SciGirls??

Each episode follows the show’s mascot, Izzie as she finds a new group of middle school girls to embark on a project. Examples include making a local wetland more enticing for turtles, engineering a giant blinking puppet for a parade, exploring dolphin behavior, uncovering artifacts at a Utah archeological dig and designing and building a miniature wind farm. Izzie goes on so many cool adventures and shows us how to make science fun!

You can learn more about the show and check out the awesome interactive website, here! You can track Izzie’s projects, watch video of the projects, learn about the SciGirls and become a SciGirl yourself!

Tell us what YOU think of SciGirls! What is YOUR favorite subject in school??

xoxo, JAM

OLY-2010-SNOWBOARD-HALFPIPE
Shaun White celebrating his Gold Medal win last night.

Yesterday marked Day 5 of the Winter 2010 Olympics and the American athletes showed their stuff winning the U.S. 3 gold medals! Superstar snowboarder Shaun White set the precendent for this years games with a new trick called the “Double McTwist 1260.”  It’s a combination of three twists and two flips, all in the same trick, on a snowboard. Whoa, sounds crazy, right?! Watching it was even more surreal. Pro snowboarders propel themselves almost  30 feet in the air and do tricks and spins in the air only to land and do them all over again on the other end of the pipe!  American Scotty Lago also had two great runs and took home the Bronze medal for the Men’s Snowboarding Halfpipe event.

American, Shauni Davis also took home gold for the Men’s 1,000 meter speedskating and famous U.S. speedskater, Apollo Ono, had a good run on the short-track that easily advanced him through the preliminaries.

Perhaps the biggest triumph of the night came from veteran skiier, Lindsay Vonn, who pushed through the pain of a bruised shin to win gold in the Women’s Downhill.  Julia Mancuso took silver in the Women’s Downhill, driving the American medal total up to 14… currently first in the world!

The events airing tonight are Men’s Figure Skating, Women’s Snowboarding Halfpipe and Women’s Speedskating. Will YOU be watching?

xoxo
