Photoshoot Secrets!

Your career as a model begins and ends with pictures. Photos are your calling card in the modeling industry. Don’t be surprised if a casting director just snaps a Polaroid and says, “Next.” That snapshot is the best way to get the most basic image of what you really look like. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a professional photographer at the beginning. To start, produce your own fashion photo shoot! That means a parent or your best friend will have to morph into your own personal fashion photographer.

The designated photographer has to know to take lots of photos – I mean tons. All the pros do this. They just snap away until they get that one terrific shot. A digital camera is your best bet for this, since you can take a lot of photos without spending a lot of money. If you don’t have a digital camera, buy a couple of disposable cameras for the project.

Prep for the Shoot!

The best look for these snapshots is neatly groomed and clean – clean face, clean hair, and freshly laundered clothes. Keep in mind, less is always more. Too much going on with your clothes just makes you look fussy and uncomfortable and takes away from you, the model. The tops you pick to wear should be bright colors, either solid or with simple patterns. Make sure to wear clothes that you love and feel comfortable in.

Taking the Shots Like the Pros!

Have your photographer take a lot of shots holding the camera vertically. An outdoor photo shoot is a great idea if it’s practical to do so. Shooting outdoors make everything easier because it eliminates the need for lights, which can cast big shadows if they’re not placed correctly. You also won’t have to worry about the flash working or getting red spots in your eyes. If you’re feeling crummy on the day of the shoot – reschedule for another day! This is a luxury you won’t have as a professional, so take advantage of it. Remember, your mood on the inside shows on the outside – so crank up the music, have fun, and go for it!
